AFAIK, the DVD Navs are not region specific. If you have the appropriate DVD-ROM's for your region, it should play fine with any disc.
The stock install disc is pretty barebones, it doesn't install the navigation computer software, but it does have a menu where you can select your destination to go to (eg. "San Francisco").
If you've got the stock DVD, you could still load the original disc and "unlock" the Nav-Software. The navigation computer software does require the NAVMAN service, and it's not included with the "off-the-shelf" install DVD. You may have to buy an install DVD, which has the necessary Nav-Service (NAVMAN) software.
UPDATE:
OK, your drive only "looks" as though it is a Japanese DVD player. It's actually a U.S. DVD player!
Check your manual to see if you can use it with the U.S. DVD-ROM.
